However- when I actually do this and start the game- instead of seeing new resources, all the images from the UI vanish and large crosses (X) appear in their place (possibly meaning that either Uplink wasn't able to find/use the new resources or some kind of hash verifying is going on to prevent external resources from running).
I followed this procedure to install a new theme in graphics.dat. So, all one presumably needs to do is to copy additional resources in respective dat file and replace the older ones with new, if needed. Bounce your connection through many hosts to slow down the backtrace. dat files inside /game folder are actually archives and can be extracted. Uplink is a pseudo-hacking game where you simulate hacking into various systems and using various fictional (but good sounding) tools to help you break through, including password guessers, cryptographic attack tools, voiceprint fakers, proxy bypassers, and more. Uplink, on the other hand, is all hacking. Activision’s Hacker can be called one, but the hacking there is only a pretext for the real game within.
